Patrick Mor
MacCrimmon – the ‘king of pipers’ is renowned for his technical ability, but
his contribution to ceol mor is much more significant. Patrick Mor is credited
with composing one of the most popular piobaireachd’s we have – Lament for the
Children. He also wrote Donald Duaghal MacKay, Donald of Laggan, and I Got a
Kiss of the King’s Hand.
Patrick Og
MacCrimmon is credited with bringing the MacCrimmon college at Boreraig to its
apex, and thus exported the MacCrimmon style throughout Scotland. While not as
prolific composer as Patrick Mor, it is likely that Patrick Og composed several
piobaireachds including Lament for Mary MacLeod and Lament for Iain Garve.
Malcolm
MacCrimmon saw out the final years of the MacCrimmon Golden Age before the
Jacobite Rising in 1745. Without his mentorship, the survival of piping after
the uprising may have been in question. Malcom is credited with composing the
last great MacCrimmon tunes – Lament for Patrick Og MacCrimmon and Lament for
Donald Ban.
